José Régio – 50 anos depois

The Challenge
To mark the 50th anniversary of the death of José Régio, the Vila do Conde City Council sought to create a visual identity that could honour the author’s complex and multifaceted legacy. The challenge was to translate his literary, visual, and symbolic universe into a cohesive and contemporary graphic language, capable of resonating with both cultural audiences and the general public.

The Solution
The identity draws from Régio’s own words and visual expression, particularly the verse “Não sei por onde vou, não sei para onde vou, sei que não vou por aí!”, as a conceptual anchor. The graphic approach reflects his connection to writing, drawing, and image-making, while a carefully defined colour palette reinforces key aspects of his legacy, black referencing Cântico Negro, blue evoking elements present in his drawings, and gold marking the significance of the golden jubilee.

The project extended beyond the identity into editorial and product design, including a perpetual planner and a comprehensive catalogue bringing together his paintings and drawings in a previously unseen collection. The result is a coherent and enduring system that celebrates Régio’s work while projecting it into the present.
